| Essex Singles Finals 02/03/20 | |
| The Finals Day of the Essex Singles took place at Braintree Leisure Centre on Sunday 1st March 2020 | |
| | |
| It is always a long day with the finalist having to play 8 games of nine ends | |
| The 40 finalist are initial drawn into 8 groups of 5 players | |
| The Winners of those 8 groups then proceed to the semi-final stage drawn into 2 groups of 4 players | |
| The winner of each semi-final group then play in the final to decide the Essex Singles Champion | |
| | |
| The 8 group winners were | |
| Group 1 Paul Youngs (Elmstead Market) - 8 points | |
| Group 2 Richard Cornell (Sewards End) - 8 points | |
| Group 3 Andrew Witney (Paxman) - 6 points winning on better shots | |
| Group 4 Eric Sainsbury (Wimbish) - 8 points | |
| Group 5 Peter Orrin (Highwoods Red) - 8 points | |
| Group 6 Greg King (Highwoods Red) - 6 points winning on better shots | |
| Group 7 Mervyn Bushe (Langham) - 6 points winning on better shots | |
| Group 8 Mark Hammond (Braintree RC) - 8 points | |
| | |
| Semi Final Group A (odd numbers) | |
| This semi final group saw many close games but eventually it was Paul Youngs who won the Group, with the key match against Peter Orrin | |
| winning on the last end Mervyn Bushe lost two games by one shot and drew with Paul to show how close the group was | |
| 1st Paul Youngs with 5 points | |
| 2nd Peter Orrin with 4 points | |
| 3rd Andrew Witney with 2 points | |
| 4th Mervyn Mervyn Bushe with 1 point | |
| | |
| Semi Final Group B (even numbers) | |
| saw Greg King carry his form into the semi finals winning all games to reach the final for the first time | |
| 1st Greg King with 6 points | |
| 2nd Eric Sainsbury with 2 points & 27 shots | |
| 3rd Richard Cornell with 2 points & 23 shots | |
| 4th Mark Hammond with 2 points & 13 shots | |
| | |
| The Final proved one game too many for Greg. The match was even for the first four ends but then Paul started to get the carpet better | |
| and in the end won comfortably. Well done to Paul & Greg and to all who took part. | |
| | |
| With Paul Youngs already qualified to play in the Fours with the Elmstead Market Team, Greg King will represent | |
| Essex at the Eastern Counties Champion of Champions on 10th May 2020. | |
| However Greg is not available for the National Champion of Champions over the weekend of 5th June and Peter Orrin (in third place | |
| on points scored in the semi final group and throughout the day) has been invited to play in the Singles at Durham | |
| Ferris Cup 2019/20 10/02/20 | |
| The Semi Final stage of the Ferris Cup has now been reached | |
| The draw for the Semi Finals were made on Sunday 9th February 2020 at Braintree Leisure Centre | |
| by Graham Evans (Acting Chairman) and Duncan Lumley (Tournament Secretary) | |
| The draw is as follow: | |
| | |
| Helions Bumpstead v Dedham | |
| and | |
| High Easter v Feering Blue | |
| | |
| All matches are to be played on a Home and Away basis and completed by Friday 27th March 2020 | |
| with the Final (again on a two legged basis) to be completed by the end of April 2020 | |
| Essex Fours 09/02/20 | |
| The Essex Fours Competition took place at Braintree Leisure Centre on Sunday 9th February 2020 | |
| 33 teams took part, intially playing in the Group stages with the six league winners and the two best runners up proceeding | |
| to the knock stages. Although the numbers were down once again, it was pleasing to see that there were no drop outs on the day, | |
| despite difficult weather conditions to and from the venue | |
| | |
| The quarter Final line up saw | |
| Elmstead Market getting the better of High Easter | |
| Bardfield 3 beating Layer de la Haye after an extra end | |
| Lawford winning against Dedham | |
| Rayne getting the better of Highwoods Red | |
| | |
| The Semi Finals saw | |
| The Elmstead Market Four of Mel Horgan/Ria Warren/Judy Sharpe/Paul Youngs just managing to win against the Bardfield 3 team | |
| of Mary Minchin/Brian Jenner/Tony Gypps/Kevin Boxall after a close and competitive match | |
| The second semi final between the Lawford Four of Joan Bulford/Ronnie Dawson/Margaret Arthey/Stephen Woodley and the | |
| Rayne Four of Ken McDonnell/Jenny Green/Maxine Poulter/Don Poulter saw scores level at 4-4 after six ends. | |
| However going for the shot, Rayne took the jack off to give victory to Lawford 6-4 | |
| | |
| This set up the Final between Elmstead Market & Lawford, but after taking an early lead the match proved one too many | |
| for the Lawford team, who had played so well throughout the day, and Elmstead Market won the match comfortably | |
| Well done to all who took part in a good days bowling BUT especially to Elmstead Market, worthy champions, and who will now be | |
| invited to represent Essex at the Eastern Counties and National Champion of Champions events in May & June this year | |
| | |
| Thanks go to Anthea Bushe & Val Kidd for running the raffle and to Terry Marsh for buying the prizes for the Raffle and Graham Evans | |
| buying the trophies and to Duncan Lumley for setting up and running the event (assisted on the day by Peter Orrin & Cliff & Lynda Richardson) | |
| Essex Pairs at Potters 04/02/20 | |
| The Essex Pairs at Potters Event took place over the weekend of Friday31st January to Monday 3rd February 2020 | |
| The Competition is organised & run by Peter Orrin & Martin Bennet on behalf of Potters Resort & Essex County CBA | |
| with Peter & Martin looking after all bookings as well as running the event | |
| | |
| This year saw a record number of just over 200 attendees playing in the Pairs Competition during the day on Saturday | |
| & Sunday as well as enjoying the outstanding facilities & entertainment which this Five Star Resort offers | |
| Attendees were mainly from Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire & Bedfordshire but there was additionally | |
| a pair taking part who had traveled from Holland, another pair who traveled down from Scotland and one player who came from Shropshire | |
| All competitors took part in the initial Group stages played during Saturday and Sunday morning (five games each) with the | |
| Group Winners and Runners Up proceeding to the knock out stages played on Sunday afternoon | |
| | |
| High quality and competitive bowling was seen throughout the two days, played in the International Arena | |
| (where the World Indoor Bowls Championship had taken place the weeks before) | |
| After the first two rounds of the knock out stages the quarter finals saw a number of Essex Pairs emerging, with a good chance of taking the Trophy | |
| The Rayne Pair of Trevor Kidd & Don Poulter took on Stephen Woodley (Lawford) playing with Josie Long from South Repps (Norfolk) | |
| - The latter pair had played well until this match but found it one match too many and Trevor & Don were comfortable winners | |
| The Highwoods Pair of Marilyn Bennet & Diane Orrin played the Brockdish (Norfolk) Pair of Jane & Joe Debattista having beaten them earlier | |
| in the Group stages. However Marilyn & Diane started slowly and although they pulled back it was not enough to stop the Norfolk pair going into the semi final | |
| The Elmstead Market Pair of Mel Horgan & Paul Youngs played the Suffolk Pair Sue & Paul Cousins (Elmsett) in another | |
| close and quality match with Mel & Paul just getting the better to move into the semi final | |
| The final quarter final match was another close (all Suffolk match) with Alan Smethers & Bryn Bowyer (Hoggards Green) | |
| winning a good match against Lisa Edmead & Stuart McNeil (Withersfield) | |
| | |
| The Semi Final draw kept the two Essex Pairs apart | |
| Trevor Kidd & Don Poulter (Rayne) kept up there winning momentum in a high quality match against Jane & Joe Debattista (Brockdish) | |
| who were never able to recover from a slow start | |
| Mel Horgan & Paul Youngs (Elmstead Market) were involved in a close and exciting match against Alan Smethers & Bryn Bowyer (Hoggards Green). | |
| Going into the final end the Hoggards Green pair were leading by two shots but Paul was able to draw in his final bowl | |
| to make a third shot (on a measure) and go through to the final. | |
| | |
| This set up an all Essex final between Trevor Kidd (a first time finalist in this competition) & Don Poulter (a previous winner) | |
| against Mel Horgan & Paul Youngs (who reached the final a few years back) | |
| As was to be expected the match was high quality between two pairs who had played well throughout the entire competition. | |
| However it was the Rayne (new) pairing of Trevor & Don who were the worthy winners and will hold the trophy for twelve months | |
| | |
| Well done to all who took part during an outstanding weekend of bowling plus excellent accommodation, food and high quality entertainment | |
| | |
| The Competition is to take place again next year (to be run again by Peter & Martin) | |
| over the Weekend staring Friday 29th January to Monday 1st February 2021 | |
| Application forms are available and will be distributed to all Essex clubs soon (plus to those who have supported in the past) | |
| Anybody wishing to receive a form can also do so by email to Peter Orrin - email address - ptrorrin@aol.com | |
